VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) — Three mosquito batches tested positive for West Nile Virus in Vermilion County.
The Vermilion County Health Department said the batches were collected near Danville, Fairmount and Ridge Farm. They are the first batches to test positive in the county this year.
"We typically observe an increase in positive mosquito samples as summer progresses, so if you haven't started protecting yourself yet, now is the time," said Director of Environmental Health Jana Messmore.
West Nile Virus symptoms include fever, body aches and vomiting.
According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there have been 42 human cases of the virus as of September 5, and 64 counties have reported positive batches or human cases.
The IDPH recommends avoiding being outdoors when mosquitos are most active, wearing longer clothes and bug repellent, and reporting standing water to local governments.
