CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The Champaign County Board has tabled a resolution calling for the resignation of county clerk Aaron Ammons.
The vote is delayed until July 2027.
It comes after Aaron and his wife, Rep. Carol Ammons, were indicted on federal charges earlier this month.
Aaron is accused of obstruction of justice, while Carol is charged with wire fraud.
During public comment, some residents spoke in defense of the county clerk and said that he deserves his chance to defend himself in federal court.
"And it seems designed to short circuit the justice system in order to force the resignation of a local elected official who hasn't even had their day in court," said one resident.
Others took the time to implore the board to pass the resolution.
"Your no vote [on] this resolution will confirm to the public that your political party and protecting your friends are more important than the public trust," said a second resident.
The motion to table the vote was made by a single board member instead of the entire board.
No discussions are made for motions to table.
The Ammons are due back in court for a pretrial conference Aug. 24.Â
