DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln is the largest women's facility in the state, but conditions inside the prison are raising serious questions.

The John Howard Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to monitoring prisons, has been keeping a close eye on the center.

The JHA surveyed the prison earlier this year, asking women how they feel about the conditions inside.

One of the most alarming findings was that 70.6% of women surveyed said they felt unsafe around staff.

The survey also revealed an increase in drug use, missing healthcare staff and reports of staff harassing women inside the facility.

JHA Executive Director Jennifer Vollen-Katz said the state must step in and take action.

"One thing is reducing the population and then looking at where else we can help women in the state of Illinois," Vollen-Katz said. "We should be holding our government accountable for the people they hold in custody."
