URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The University of Illinois welcomes a new artificial intelligence computing program. DeltaAI, an advanced AI data resource, is now nestled in the world-class National Petascale Computing Facility at the U of I.
'It is state of the art, and it will help ensure that our researchers are working with the very best equipment' says Bill Gropp, the Director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
Gropp works hands-on with the AI software, a companion to the pre-existing Delta. The new addition of using artificial intelligence, will be an asset to not only the University, but to researchers across the country.
'It's going to transform all sorts of scholarship, engineering, and the sciences. The students that have both access to the equipment to do this, and faculty that are looking at this have a stronger learning experience.'
The funding for DeltaAI came from nearly $30 million in awards from the U.S. National Science Foundation. The program is completely accessible to researchers across the country through the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource.
DeltaAI will help researchers solve and understand some of the world's most challenging problems. On campus, Gropp shares, students are going to be impacted positively in the classroom.
He explains, although AI cannot retain the information that a human being can, AI can support students in their studies and be an asset.
'When calculators came out, there was a concern that students wouldn't learn as much. We learned how to take advantage of the calculators. The same thing will happen with AI. Students that use AI to do their homework are not going to learn, but students that use their AI to do harder homework are going to be able to do things that we can't do today.'
Researchers are excited to see the growth in science, engineering, and data with the help of DeltaAI.
