MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - The Lake Mattoon Beach is temporarily closed due to higher-than-normal levels of E. coli bacteria in the water.

Lake Mattoon, Marina & Campgrounds posted to Facebook Thursday that its recent biweekly testing had shown 344.8/100 and 325.5/100 of bacteria in the samples.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, beaches and swimming pools must close if they test 235 E. coli per 100 milliliters of water or higher.

The beach will remain closed until two samples collected on the same day test below that mark.

The post added that further testing will be done in the coming days, weather pending.
