Lawsuit: Bus company harassed, embarrassed customers

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – A federal lawsuit says a bus company in Illinois discriminates against and harassed its customers.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is behind the lawsuit, which is against Suburban Express Inc. It says owner Dennis Toeppen has a history of publicly shaming and embarrassing people who used the service. Madigan says Toeppen also gave up credit card and bank account numbers of customers in websites that attacked individual people.

In December, a mass-marketing email said riders “won’t feel like you’re in China when you’re on our buses”.

Madigan says she “seeks to shut this company down for good”. It gives college students in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana service to Chicago.

Toeppen says he will “vigorously” fight the lawsuit.
