Macon County receives Flood Mitigation Assistance grant

MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded Macon County with nearly $272,000 to purchase three flood-prone homes.

The money is being provided through FEMA's Flood Mitigation Assistance Program, which aims to reduce or eliminate the risk of loss of life or property due to flooding.  Grants are provided to state and local governments for long-term flood mitigation measures, and the $271,992 grant will cover a large part of the $322,652 cost to purchase the homes.  The remainder will be covered by Macon County.

Acting Regional Administrator of FEMA Region V Janet Odeshoo says, "the removal of these three structures will establish a permanent open space that will reduce damages and lessen the impact of flooding on the local community."
