MT. ZION, Ill. (WAND) - Mt. Zion Community Unit School District announced the passing of its long-time track and cross-country coach, Bill Harbeck.Â
"He served our students for the past 18 years. Bill’s passion and dedication to our students and coaches has left a permanent mark on our athletic community," the District said in a statement.Â
"Students and coaches alike will endeavor to uphold his legacy at Mt. Zion."Â
Harbeck passed away May 12.Â
Harbeck was an Army veteran, serving in Panama.Â
He worked as a coach for over 50 years, coaching track and cross-country at Wheeler, Charleston, MacArther, and Mt. Zion High Schools.Â
Harbeck and his wife, Vicky, owned Del Carmen's Pizza, expanding to multiple locations.Â
