CHAMPAIGN – Parkland College announces a new program coming this next fall semester will give students the skills to work on websites and in web-based application design.
The Interactive Design program will be featured as a third career concentration in the College’s Graphic Design program. The Interactive Design AAS degree plans to focus on designing interactive user experiences for websites and mobile devices using the latest technology.
Program participants would take courses in web design and development while building a portfolio of marketable media products, including websites, mobile apps, e-books and web animation.
This new program will expand on the growing trend in the marketing communications industry toward utilizing digital media design (i.e., designing for screens) for websites and devices such as tablets, e-readers and smartphones, according to Program Director Paul Young.
The certificate will also stress competency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other web development tools.
Young says the program takes two years to complete and will consist of 65 credit hours, with courses grounded in visual literacy, creative problem solving and current technology.
This program was designed in collaboration with the Computer Science and Information Technology Department. Its introduction also added two new courses to the Graphic Design lineup: Interactive Design I and II.
In addition to traditional courses, program participants will also have an internship class, as well as portfolio seminar. The seminar will consist of industry professionals interview students and evaluate their work before students graduate.
