Police: Man disarms officer, turns gun on himself

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WAND) -- Investigation is underway after one man is dead and a police officer was disarmed early Saturday morning.

Charleston Police said, they were called to the 200 block of W. Lincoln Ave. just after 1 a.m. 

Police said, a 22 year old man called 911 requesting immediate assistance.

After they arrived, officers tried to identify the issue. 

Preliminary investigation discovered an officer was disarmed and the man grabbed the firearm and shot himself. 

He was taken to a nearby hospital and died. 

Illinois State Police were asked to lead the investigation.
