SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield Police Department has made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting that happened on the city's southwest side on July 10.
Springfield police say the shooting happened in the 100 block of West Lake Drive at about 4:02 p.m. Officers say a 26-year-old man was found at the scene with several gunshot wounds to the chest, and was taken to a hospital where he would later be pronounced dead. Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards identified the victim as John Laprice Morgan.
On July 20, Springfield police say officers were joined by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Illinois Department of Corrections to arrest Kortez Brown-Joiner, 24, for a parole violation. During an Mirandized interview, detectives say Brown-Joiner allegedly confessed to the shooting.
Brown-Joiner is facing preliminary charges of first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
