SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill moving in the Capitol could increase awareness of agriculture education programs.

The Illinois State Board of Education would be required to submit a report on the status and availability of ag education programs on or before March 1, 2027.

This report would include trends, challenges, opportunities for expansion and recommendations to best align education with workforce and post secondary options in agriculture and agribusiness.

"As we grow our ag programs, we're also growing ag teachers," said Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha). "We're supporting the economy across the state of Illinois by teaching more of the hands on stuff that students get in our schools."

This bill passed unanimously out of the House Education Policy Committee and now moves to the House floor.

Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) is the sponsor of the same bill in her chamber. Senate Bill 3226 passed unanimously out of the Senate Education Committee March 3 and awaits further action.

"From Chicago to Southern Illinois, agriculture plays a role in each and every corner of our state," Turner said. "Students should have the opportunity to know what programs are available."
