SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to address discrepancies between the state's police officer body camera and Illinois State Police dash camera laws.

The legislation clarifies that if a victim or witness of a crime asks a state trooper to turn off their body camera, the officer must tell them that their vehicle's dash camera will still record video.

This law also notes that recordings on dash cameras can be retained in the same manner and time periods as Illinois State Police keep body camera footage.

"We're eliminating the conundrum we've found ourselves in," said ISP Lt. John Thompson. "As we've been implementing this program over the past year, we've started to identify some of these as needing some clarification."

The law will also help the Attorney General's office improve the state's recent law regarding child pornography. This plan states that child pornography charges should not apply to the creator of a film, video or photo if the creator is the sole subject of the content.

Senate Bill 2655 took effect immediately.
