DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Two years ago SkyWest, operating in Decatur as United Express, said it would end its service at the Decatur Airport due to a pilot shortage. The airline is still serving the airport and there are some indications efforts are being made to keep United Express here.
“That’s a conversation we’re looking to have here in the next couple of weeks actually with SkyWest,” Park Board Member Chris Harrison told WAND News on Wednesday.
The Decatur Park District, which operates the airport, had indicated last fall it would be replacing United Express with Contour airlines jet service. But United is still selling tickets as if it is staying awhile longer.
United Express started serving Decatur in March 2020. About a week later the COVID pandemic created havoc in the airline history impacting passenger levels. The Decatur Airport has seen passenger levels bounce back. In 2023, nearly 11,000 people used the airport to fly to Chicago.
