President Donald Trump has signed a bill funding much of the Department of Homeland Security and ending the longest agency shutdown in history. The bipartisan funding package passed the House earlier Thursday. The Trump administration had warned that temporary funds to pay Transportation Security Administration and other personnel would “soon run out” if Congress failed to act. The shutdown lasted for more than 70 days as Democrats refused to fund Trump’s immigration enforcement operations without changes. Republicans instead adopted a budget resolution to eventually provide $70 billion for immigration enforcement though a separate process on their own, without Democratic help.

Union representatives and safety consultants say the case of the man charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at a media dinner is the latest example of someone allegedly trying to use the country's passenger trains to smuggle guns for an attack. They say it won't be the last until ground transportation companies address security and passenger screening. Rail passenger advocates argue that TSA-style checkpoints are impractical at stations. Authorities allege Cole Tomas Allen was arrested with weapons he brought with him to Washington via Amtrak from California. A lawyer representing Allen notes he has no criminal record and is presumed innocent.

Federal prosecutors say a 44-year-old Los Angeles woman was arrested Saturday night at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of helping Iran traffic weapons to Sudan, which is in its fourth year of a bloody civil war. First U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Sunday on social media that the woman will face charges that she brokered the sale of “drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition” between Iran and the Sudanese Armed Forces. She is an Iranian national who became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016. The defendant is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Monday.
