Shota Imanaga pitched seven crisp innings and the Chicago Cubs ended Ildemaro Vargas’ 27-game hitting streak while blanking the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0. Ian Happ homered, tripled and doubled for the Cubs, who extended their winning streak at Wrigley Field to 10 games, their longest at home since 2008. The San Diego Padres have reached an agreement to sell control of the team to an investor group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano. The family of late owner Peter Seidler formally announced the deal Saturday. The sale must still be approved by Major League Baseball. The deal with private equity billionaire Feliciano and his wife took shape last month at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion. The Padres’ announcement of the deal didn’t give specifics on the members of the investor group or the purchase price. Seidler’s family began to explore a sale of the Padres last November, two years after the death of the popular Peter Seidler, who became the Padres’ primary owner in 2020.
Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner is day to day after leaving the team's 6-5 victory over the Diamondbacks because of neck tightness. Hoerner’s neck started to bother him before the game. He hit a leadoff double in the first inning and scored on Michael Busch’s two-run single. But Matt Shaw batted for Hoerner in the second and remained in the game at second base. Hoerner’s neck tightness was on his left side. He has been one of the majors’ best players so far this season. The two-time Gold Glove winner is batting .297 with four homers, 26 RBIs and seven steals in 32 games.

Alex Cora was offered a managerial position by the Philadelphia Phillies after being fired by the Boston Red Sox. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski reached out to Cora, but he declined for family reasons. The Phillies then appointed Don Mattingly as interim manager after firing Rob Thomson on Tuesday. Thomson had led the team to multiple playoff appearances, including the 2022 World Series, but the team struggled this season. Mattingly, a former Yankees great, will now work alongside his son, the Phillies' general manager. The Phillies hope Mattingly can turn the season around and aim for a wild-card spot.

The Dodgers lead 5-0 in the sixth, with Dalton Rushing contributing an RBI single. The Cubs struggled to capitalize on opportunities, going 0-for-20 with runners on base. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings in the loss.
