A federal jury in Chicago has awarded $49.5 million to the family of a 24-year-old nonprofit global health worker killed in the 2019 crash of a Boeing 737 Max jet in Ethiopia. Samya Stumo was traveling to Uganda for her first major assignment with a health-focused nonprofit when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board. Jurors awarded damages for her suffering during the flight, as well as for her family’s loss and grief. It is the second jury verdict tied to the crash. Boeing has already accepted responsibility for the disaster and settled most wrongful death lawsuits. The crash prompted worldwide grounding of the Max and years of legal and regulatory scrutiny of Boeing.
