Citing the importance of the First Amendment, a federal judge in California says the U.S. government is unconstitutionally silencing critics of Israel and others in its quest to deport noncitizens who the government says have disrupted college campuses as they expressed their views. Judge Noël Wise struck down portions of provisions the federal government follows with deportations on free-speech grounds and other parts for vagueness, which she says violates the Fifth Amendment. The ruling was a victory for the student newspaper at Stanford University, which maintained that the threat of deportation had led some noncitizens to no longer work there or express their views.
