Under Denver Archbishop James Francis Stafford and his successors, Charles Chaput and Samuel Aquila, Denver became a national hub for some of the most influential conservative Catholic evangelizing ministries. But now, Pope Leo XIV has appointed new leadership for the influential archdiocese. Starting next week, Denver will be led by Archbishop James Golka, a pick embraced by constituencies across the spectrum in Denver. Golka, who was bishop of Colorado Springs, has the potential to be a more unifying leader for Denver, whose previous archbishops inspired polarized responses, seen both as faithful defenders of orthodoxy and combative culture warriors.
