Myrrh, a key ingredient in some luxury perfumes, is becoming harder to harvest in Ethiopia because of a historic drought. Experts say the seasonal rains have failed for years now. Starving livestock and animals have also damaged young trees and seedlings. Researchers backed by various organizations visited the region earlier this year. They want local myrrh harvesters to earn more money and reduce reliance on middlemen. Some locals earn only a few dollars per kilogram. Traders often take the resin across the border to Somalia and sell it as a Somali product.
