The superintendent of Georgia's DeKalb County school district has been indicted on federal charges alleging he ran a kickback scheme in suburban Chicago. Devon Horton was indicted Wednesday in Chicago on 17 counts of wire fraud, embezzlement and tax evasion. Prosecutors allege Horton issued over $280,000 in contracts to friends when he was previously superintendent of the Evanston-Skokie school district. Horton is alleged to have received more than $80,000 in kickbacks and used money from Evanston-Skokie for personal purchases. The DeKalb County school board suspended Horton with pay on Thursday. Horton’s lawyer says he is eager to address the case in court.
