Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd is going to have surgery after he injured his left knee while hanging out with his kids. Boyd had an MRI that showed a meniscus issue, and manager Craig Counsell says the team isn’t sure how long the left-hander is going to be out. Boyd was placed on the 15-day injured list before Chicago’s game against Cincinnati. Right-hander Trent Thornton was brought up from Triple-A Iowa, and left-hander Charlie Barnes was designated for assignment. The 35-year-old Boyd is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA. Counsell says Boyd got hurt when he sat down with his kids and got back up.
