The Cleveland region is home to the oldest temple in the Mormon movement — and its newest in the U.S. The oldest was built in Kirtland, Ohio, in the 1830s and no longer functions as an active temple. But the faithful regularly visit the historic site, where they believe the movement's founder, Joseph Smith, received divine revelations. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased the site two years ago from a historically related church. On Aug. 16, the LDS plans to dedicate a new temple in the nearby suburb of Independence. The temple, a place for sacred rites, is part of a worldwide expansion of LDS temples.
