Progressive city council member Nithya Raman has advanced to a November runoff against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, setting up an unexpected matchup between two Democrats and former political allies to run the struggling city of nearly 4 million. The outcome means Spencer Pratt, a Republican and former reality television personality from “The Hills,” is out of the running. Raman made a last-minute entry into the race, after she had endorsed Bass for reelection. The race also has historical markers. Bass is the first Black woman to hold the post, and Raman could be the first South Asian woman in the job.

California’s congressional primaries on Tuesday are a preliminary test of Democrats’ best chance at countering Republican redistricting gains elsewhere this year. The party won voter approval last year to redraw the state's congressional map to create five more winnable U.S. House seats. But some Democrats now worry that they could be locked out of the November ballot in one of those districts, near San Diego. The reason: So many Democrats are running for the seat, they could split the vote and allow two Republicans to advance to the runoff. Other races elsewhere in the state are defined by the progressive-establishment split among Democrats.
President Donald Trump is congratulating Texas Sen. John Cornyn for having a “great career” while also congratulating the man who beat Cornyn in a primary with his endorsement. Cornyn tried for more than a year to show Trump and Texas Republicans he and the president were on the same team. Cornyn posted a photo of himself reading Trump’s book and proposed renaming a stretch of interstate for him. But on Tuesday, Cornyn became the latest Republican to lose a primary after falling out of favor with a president with little tolerance for dissent and an appetite for retribution. Trump says he’ll stay friends with Cornyn as they watch Ken Paxton become a “fantastic” senator.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. He defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn. Paxton was endorsed by President Donald Trump last week. His victory in Tuesday’s runoff makes Cornyn the first Republican senator from Texas to lose the party’s nomination for reelection. Trump endorsed Paxton as part of his effort to dislodge GOP officeholders he views as less than devout in their support of him. Cornyn said in 2023 as Trump was running to return to the White House that his time “has passed him by.” Paxton will run against state Rep. James Talarico in November.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn in a massively expensive, drawn-out U.S. Senate primary race. Paxton was endorsed by President Donald Trump last week. His is victory Tuesday showcases the president’s power over his party as he seeks to punish Republicans he sees as insufficiently loyal. Paxton will run against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in November.
Texas Republican Senate candidates Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton had no public campaign events on the last day before Tuesday's runoff. But their faces were unavoidable on TV, given their heavy final round ad spending. Their fight for Tuesday’s runoff continued as it has for months via advertising that has topped $109 million between the two campaigns and groups that support them.
Ken Paxton is playing up President Donald Trump's endorsement as the Texas attorney general heads into the final days of U.S. Senate primary runoff against incumbent John Cornyn. Paxton opened a recent event by talking about the endorsement. He also criticized Democratic nominee James Talarico, who's awaiting the winner of Tuesday's election. The race is the latest campaign where Trump is encouraging voters to oust a politician who's displeased him and elect a challenger more aligned with the president. Cornyn and his allies argue that Paxton's history, including an acquittal in an impeachment trial, will hurt the GOP in the general election.
President Donald Trump's repeated false claims about his 2020 election loss is almost certain to play a role in Georgia's four-week runoff campaign as Republican voters choose nominees for governor, secretary of state and the U.S. Senate. Among the contenders are one of Trump’s alternate electors in his attempt to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s win in the state. The GOP runoff also features a Trump acolyte who won his first congressional race while saying Trump won in 2020 and a secretary of state hopeful who echoes Trump’s conspiracy theories as he vies to become Georgia’s top elections official. To be clear, Georgia’s presidential votes were counted three times, including once by hand, and each one affirmed Biden’s victory.
