Senate Majority Leader John Thune is defending a plan to give the Secret Service up to $1 billion for security upgrades to Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project. Thune said the total is what it costs to protect the president in a "dangerous world.” Thune and Senate Republicans are facing questions about the plan, which they added to a spending bill after a man was charged with trying to assassinate Trump at a media dinner. Trump has said that his  ballroom would cost around $400 million and be paid for with private money. But the White House had not previously proposed a number for security costs.
