Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a powerful Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic while a disturbance dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is striking the Caribbean and taking aim a the Southeast United States. Humberto had maximum sustained winds of 145 mph Friday night. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says it is expected to continue to strengthen rapidly. Humberto is churning well off the coasts of the northern Leeward Islands. The potential tropical cyclone forced tropical storm warnings and watches in parts of the Bahamas. Forecasters say the system is on track to approach the Southeast U.S. by early next week. South Carolina’s governor issued a state of emergency Friday ahead of the storm.
