(WAND) - The high school boys' soccer postseason has led to both thrilling, last-minute victories, and convincing performances from local programs.
Regional action continued Saturday as Monticello played host to Pleasant Plains and Athens. After jumping out to a two goal lead, the Warriors faced pressure from the Cardinals who stole momentum late in the game. A pair of goals in the second half sent the game to extra time level at 2-2. In the first stint, teams traded blows, but with seconds remaining Athens mounted a counter-attack that led to a goal by Connor Mabus, just seconds before the horn. Pleasant Plains went full-attack in the second stint to try and draw level, but the Warriors held off the effort to clinch the regional crown 3-2. It's their first ever postseason trophy.
In the sectional, Athens will take on St. Joseph-Ogden, the top seed who were able to win 4-0 over University High from Urbana.
Meanwhile in the Macon regional, #1 seed Williamsville found an offensive surge against the hosts Meridian, winning their fourth consecutive regional, 7-0. The Hawks finish their season proud of their effort, setting a program record for wins in a season with 16 victories.
Effingham were able to keep their postseason hopes alive, winning the regional crown over Staunton, 4-0, behind the efforts of Maicol Sefton and Gage Kinder.
In the 2A bracket, Glenwood will hope to keep their run of form alive following a 4-1 victory over Springfield.
