CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Week one of training camp is in the books and for one Illini safety, it feels good to be back.

This is Matthew Bailey's first training camp in two years. Last year he had to watch from the sideline as he recovered from an ankle injury. He finally got back on the field in week three against Penn State. But it was a short lived comeback as a shoulder injury forced him to go under the knife, ending his season.

To put things into perspective, that is almost two years of rehabbing. But Bailey is feeling good now and he's ready to give this secondary a boost.

"It feels good. Obviously. Like it's been a long time coming," said Bailey. "So, just to be able to get on the field and kind of get with my guys again. It's just such a good feeling to be back out there."

"He was hurt, you know, he was getting mental reps, taking his reps in the back end," said defensive back Xavier Scott. "But not everybody's going to be him at the end of the day. He's a hard worker. You know he's always going to put the team first and, you know, do his job."

In his freshman season, Bailey forced three interceptions and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

The safety is going to try to bring those ball hawking skills to this Illini secondary. A secondary that is looking to recapture the magic that they had in that 2022 season.
