DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) -Â A weather inversion is a phenomenon in which the typical temperature pattern of the atmosphere is reversed. Typically, air temperature decreases as altitude increases, but during an inversion, a layer of warmer air sits above a layer of cooler air near the ground. This creates a stable atmospheric condition that can trap pollutants and fog close to the ground.
The low clouds and fog patches earlier today gave way to sunshine in many locales as our latest inversion weakened. However, for the area near I-70, the inversion is holding strong tonight, causing patches of dense fog. Caution is advised if traveling in this area. Â
Elsewhere, a tranquil start to the night is in store. Despite a turn to chillier weather tonight, there is more warmth headed our way for the rest of this week. Â
Stay safe, stay weather-aware, and happy holidays!
