DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - We will enjoy a moderately cooler pattern for the last few days of summer. The change in temperatures is largely thanks to rain finally returning to the forecast today, and the rain will stick around well into the start of fall.

Showers between tonight and Saturday night will likely only amount to a quarter of an inch for most across the region. By Sunday, scattered showers will pick up in the evening, bringing more of the region to the half or even three-quarters of an inch mark.

Although the rain might be a damper for outdoor weekend plans, this rain is welcomed across Central Illinois after over two weeks without any measurable amount of rain.

In the Climate Prediction Center's drought monitor update from yesterday, we saw the area under severe drought expand by 15% in the last week. We also saw similar numbers for areas under a moderate drought. Thankfully, we have plenty of rain on tap for the long-term portion of our forecast.
