DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - I have mentioned numerous times on air, and I will state it again here: always look at the origin of the air. Despite milder weather over the past 24 hours over the central and southern Plains, the direct injection of air for us is the northern US Plains and Canadian Plains. Suffice it to say, it is cold!

Last night, the wind kept huffing and puffing, allowing relatively mild air (above freezing) to mix down to the ground. We do not have that luxury tonight or Thursday night. This means a frost will blanket a large piece of real estate for at least one, if not two nights. We are also approaching the time of the first average freeze, when temperatures get below freezing. A few cold countryside locales may do just that early Friday morning.

Looking ahead, a northerly flow of air continues to move into the state for most of the remainder of this month. That will argue for below-average temperatures for trick-or-treaters. Something to keep in mind if you do not have a costume already.

Stay safe, stay weather-aware and stay warm.
