Child in car seat

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is hosting a car seat inspection event Monday.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the north parking lot garage at 201 W. Kenyon Rd. in Champaign.

Certified child passenger safety technicians and instructor-proxy technicians will help parents and guardians with proper installation and safety information. You do not need an appointment.

This is an early event of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Child Passenger Safety Week, which takes place September 21-27.

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children. NHTSA research shows 46 percent of car seats are misused. In 2024, 85 percent of car seats seen at CUPHD were misused. Common issues include placing children in the wrong type of seat for their age and size and improper installation.

Inspections will take about 30 minutes. Technicians will make sure children are in the right seats for their ages and sizes, check installation, and share information about the importance of registering car seats with the manufacturer to get recall notifications.

If you are not able to attend this event, inspections are offered on the second Monday of every month at CUPHD, except on holidays. Appointments are required for these and can be made by calling (217) 353-4932.
