SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - As the fall season sets in and temperatures begin to drop, a simple jar of peanut butter or even a warm winter coat can make all the difference.

The Leland Grove Police Department and community members teamed up Sunday to collect essentials for those in need.

"The need right now is greater than ever with our community," said Leader of P&J Springfield Kathy Smith.

In partnership with the Leland Grove Police Department, Smith requested peanut butter, jelly, and other toiletries people may need.

Chief of Police Dan Ryan leads Toys for Tots. The concept of this drive is simple -  pull up and drop off your donation.

"It's been incredible. I had cars starting to show up 15 minutes before we were even open for business," said Ryan. "It's just amazing the amount of support this community has for us."

The helping hands organization will receive the donations from the drive, and the Washington Street Mission provides essentials to those in need year-round.
