DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Decatur Club announced Wednesday that its doors are closed effective immediately.
Â
The historic landmark has been in the community for over 125 years, and many community members have an emotional connection to it.Â
Â
"It has such a rich history of major events and celebrations and weddings and announcements, plus some really, really important meetings have happened over the years there. It's just been a mainstay, and it's such a part of our roots," said Mayor Julia Moore Wolfe.Â
Â
At one point in time, Wolfe served on the Club's board. Though the city may be grieving the closure, Wolfe is optimistic that the space will stay in the Decatur family because it has enormous potential. There have been weddings held inside the venue for generations; the grand staircase is where many brides have made their entrance.
Â
Those memories have led the community to wonder why the sudden closure.Â
Â
"Although it seems sudden to us, I'm sure that this has been something that the Decatur Club board has been struggling with for some time," Wolfe said.
Â
This afternoon, the Decatur Club released a statement sharing how necessary the decision was, despite the emotional toll.Â
Â
"This decision was not made lightly. The Board and management team will be working diligently to explore all solutions and next steps, including updates on timelines and opportunities for input as plans develop," the club said in a statement.
