DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Decatur Club is unexpectedly closing its doors in Decatur.

The club confirmed to WAND News Wednesday afternoon that the closure is expected to be temporary.

The Decatur Club Board in a statement to WAND News said the closure was due to "extenuating circumstances." It did not elaborate on what the circumstances are that forced the closure or how the closure could last.

In a statement, the board said it needed to "pause operations" to address matters "impacting the Club's ability to continue serving members, guests, and the community."

The board said it is working to explore all solutions and next steps. The statement indicated the group was looking to solidify a long-term plan.

The Decatur Club has been located at the corner of West Prairie Avenue and North Church Street since 1931. It used to be at the Barnes-Citizens building near Central Park.

Last year, the club celebrated its 140th anniversary and added new signage at the building. Recently, Decatur Club General Manager Jeff Ingle left to take a similar position at the Decatur Country Club.

In addition to membership, the Decatur Club offered lunch and dinner options, hosted business meetings, events, and weddings.

Several Facebook users posted on the WAND News Facebook page they were scheduled to hold weddings or wedding receptions at the Decatur Club but had not been notified of the closure, instead reading first about the closure from WAND News.

The Club's statement said "members, vendors, and stakeholders will receive direct communication regarding next steps, including updates on timelines and opportunities for input as plans develop."

WAND News reported in 2024 that the club had approximately 230 members and was hoping to grow.
