SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield YMCA is asking people to donate to a Diaper Drive for The James Project supporting foster kids.

The drive, being held in partnership with Hy-Vee and Capitol Radio Group, is being held through Sunday, April 7.

Diapers in sizes Preemie, Newborn, and One, or any size Pull-Ups can be dropped off at either Downtown or Kerasotes YMCA lobbies or donated at Hy-Vee.

“There is a critical need for diapers for foster families supported by The James Project, a local non-profit that provides resources, necessities, and supplies to local foster families. A foster family can go through more than 50 diapers a week per baby. We hope to solve the shortage of diapers for foster babies in our community with the generosity of our members and partners through our Diaper Drive”, said Angie Sowle, CEO, YMCA of Springfield YMCA.

“Of the 625 children currently in foster care in Sangamon County, most came into care with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Partnering with organizations like the YMCA is essential in providing our foster children and their families with the necessities these children need as they transition into a foster home. We are so grateful to the individuals supporting the YMCA and the organization itself for coming alongside the James Project to help our vulnerable children. It is often underestimated what a simple gift of diapers can do for a family”, said Sarah Homeier, Ministry and Family Director at The James Project.

The Y Diaper Drive is part of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Springfield YMCA which was founded March 25, 1874.

Diaper Drive donations can be made at both YMCA’s, Downtown Y at 601 N. 4th, and Kerasotes Y at 4550 W Iles and at Hy-Vee, 2115 N. MacArthur Blvd in Springfield now through Sunday, April 7.

All diapers will be donated to The James Project following the drive.
