DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur has begun the first steps in modernizing their facilities to the tune of $90 million.

On Wednesday the hospital held a ceremony to celebrate the groundbreaking of their new helipad.

Chad Markham, Central Illinois Market Chief Operating Officer said this will help remove barriers with patient transfers. "Because it really is an amazing time for St. Mary's and for the Decatur area. This modernization project will take our healthcare industry well into the future, by continuing to care for Macon County and the surrounding areas."

The modernization plan will include four state-of-the-art operating rooms, a re-designed recovery unit and two new gastroenterology laboratories.
