HOMER, Ill. (WAND) - An 82-year-old person is dead after their vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire Monday afternoon in Champaign County.

The Champaign County Sheriff's Office said it responded to an accident around 12:15 p.m. on 2500 E, just north of 700 N.

An investigation had shown that the driver was going north on 2500 E when it veered off the road and hit a tree.

Someone nearby who was not a witness had checked on the driver and managed to pull them out of the vehicle, which was full of smoke, and started performing CPR, only to stop once it was determined they were dead.

No other people were found inside or around the vehicle.

The Champaign County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the person's cause of death.

No other details are available.
