DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Putting on boxing gloves, stepping into the ring and throwing a few punches is nothing new for Jordan Maxey. The Decatur native grew up in the boxing ring his entire life.
"My grandpa boxed, my uncles boxed, my grandma was a judge for many years, my mom's been around it. My whole family has been around it (boxing). It's been a family thing," said Jordan Maxey.
Maxey went through the armatures, won the Golden Glove a hand full of times. He also, won a World Championship at the Ringside, went to Nationals and even hit the pros. Now, in 2019, Maxey can add another title to his resume.
"Ended up opening my own gym and here we are today," said Maxey. "It's been a dream of mine for a long time."
Maxey's Boxing Club isn't just for boxers, as the owner, Jordan Maxey said this club offers unique fitness classes.
"I love seeing everyone reach their goals. I love seeing people who walk through the door and a month later they are throwing punches like they never could believe they could throw," said Maxey. "I feel like I have a lot of knowledge because I trained with a lot of professionals."
On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings Maxey offers a women's cardio class. During the class, Maxey said he incorporates training he used during this boxing career to help women reach their fitness goals.
"The first thing they ask me every time, "do I have to get hit?"," laughed Maxey. "The answer to that question is no, you do not have to get hit. This is cardio boxing class... I teach the fundamentals, but mostly this class is fun high paced class."
Maxey said boxing gave him confidence as a child and he hopes through his boxing club he can give women, men and kid the confidence they need to conqure whatever life throws at them.
"The amount of confidence that a child gets by coming in here and learning how to box and be around other kids and be a good child," said Maxey.
