CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) — Voters in several counties said no to tax hikes for schools Tuesday night.

WAND News spoke with superintendents from two different districts. They said the referendum would have fixed or added buildings in their districts but were shot down yesterday at the polls.

Now, they are regrouping and working to move forward.

Voters in Douglas, Moultrie, Coles, Piatt, and Champaign counties were asked to vote on a proposed bond referendum. It would have allocated more than $24 million for upgrades to HVAC, improve ADA compliance, and security.

In a phone call with Arthur Superintendent Shannon Cheek, he said, "The need doesn't go away. We just don't know what to do now."

Cheek said that the district would try to rework their plan, but he believes the upgrades were needs, not wants.

Voters in Champaign also shot down a bond referendum for Mahomet Seymour CUSD 3. It would have allocated $112.8 million to build a new second and third grade building and a new sixth through eighth grade building. It also called for construction of a new track and additional parking.

This does not mean that these plans would never happen, but it could mean that you see a different referendum on a future ballot.
