CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A Champaign man is charged with drug-induced homicide after police said he sold someone fentanyl, leading to that person's overdose death.Â
Dewon D. King, 33, was arraigned Monday, the News Gazette reports. He was arrested Saturday on a warrant that had been issued Sept. 20.Â
Police said King sold fentanyl to Daniel Fox, 53, of Morris in July near downtown Champaign.Â
Fox's body was found in a parking lot in the 600 block of North Neil St. in the early morning hours of July 10.Â
Champaign Police said King is shown on surveillance video selling fentanyl to Fox.Â
They said the video then shows Fox taking the drug before falling back on top of an electrical box unresponsive.
The News Gazette reports the video showed another man come up to an unconscious Fox and taking cash out of his pockets.Â
Police said King is also shown coming back up to the unconscious Fox and taking items from him, including his cellphone, before leaving.
No one called for help.
Fox was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 a.m. that Monday.
The News Gazette reports police were able to identify King on the surveillance video based on an interaction they had with him a few days earlier.
If convicted of the charge, King faces a mandatory prison term of 15 to 30 years.
