CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A woman is facing 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder related to a November 2024 stabbing death in Champaign.

67-year-old Dewandee Carter of Champaign was arrested in February 2025 after an investigation into the 2024 stabbing death of 71-year-old W. B. Curry.

According to the Champaign Police Department, officers responded to a domestic disturbance in November 2024 and found Curry, who had been stabbed, unresponsive in his home.

Curry was pronounced dead at the scene.

During investigation, police learned that Curry was involved in a domestic fight with Carter when she stabbed him in the chest. 

Carter was initially arrested in November 2024, but was released without charges at the time.

After further investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Carter in February 2025, and she was arrested.

Carter pleaded guilty to second degree murder and will serve 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections/Champaign County Correctional Center. She received credit for 374 days served.
