Shooting at Marketplace Mall

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A 16-year-old boy died after being shot in a mall parking lot in Champaign on Saturday evening. 

Champaign police said they responded to a fight near the Dick's House of Sport store at the Market Place Shopping Center on N. Neil Street around 6:15 p.m. 

It's unknown how many people were involved in the fight or how it started. Police said at least one person fired a gun.

The teen was taken to a hospital but died several hours later. The name of the teen has not been released. 

No arrests have been made. It's not clear if the mall has an on-site security team or any security cameras pointed at the parking lot where the fight happened. 

The mall is owned by Chicago-based GGP. The company owns shopping malls all over the U.S. An email to the company on Sunday morning was not immediately returned. 

Champaign police are asking for the public's help with any information. Crime Stoppers is also taking anonymous tips at 217-373-8477.
