Decatur man charged in St. Louis for rape, burglary while working as DoorDash driver

ST. LOUIS (WAND) — A man from Decatur was arrested in St. Louis while working as a driver for the delivery service, DoorDash.

Travaye J. Gaines was charged with burglary, attempted rape, sexual misconduct, and resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony.

According to a police statement, Gaines forced his way into a woman's apartment on Oct. 17 while delivering food. He removed her covering and grabbed her breast. The victim was able to escape to a neighbor's residence for help. She then exited the apartment building.

After leaving the apartment, she received a FaceTime call from an unknown number. When she answered, she said that she saw Gaines masturbating.

St. Louis Police were able to obtain Gaines' location through communication with DoorDash and tried to detain him.

After being placed in handcuffs, he was able to maneuver the handcuffs from behind his back to his front. He then got into his vehicle in an attempt to escape. Police were able to detain him and place him under arrest before he was able to drive off.

A preliminary hearing was held in St. Louis Thursday morning and Gaines is due back in court on October 26.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
