Decatur man training Beagles for upcoming rabbit season

CENTRAL ILLINOIS, Ill. (WAND) - Hunters from all over are sharpening their skills for the upcoming rabbit season.  However, one local man is training man's best friend to join in the hunt.

Decatur resident James Dolly helps train Beagle puppies to hunt rabbits.  Dolly says Beagles are well suited to hunting small game, and that since rabbit season is just a few months away, now is the perfect time to start training.

"They get pretty excited about going hunting, about like I do," says Dolly.

Though the history of the Beagle in the United States dates all the way back to 1876, training these dogs utilizes recent advancements in technology.  One such advancement is the use of GPS to track the puppies during their training.

"We use GPS on them now.  We know where the dog is at all the time.  We can track all their movements and train at the same time," says Dolly.
