Decatur Police Chief announces retirement after 28 years

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - After 28 years, Police Chief Shane Brandel is announcing his retirement from the Decatur Police Department.

Chief Brandel joined the DPD in April 1997 and has served in various units across all three divisions of the department during his career. He became a Detective in 2000, then advanced to Sergeant in 2005, Lieutenant in 2015, and Deputy Chief of Police in 2016. He was appointed Chief of Police in July 2021.

WAND sat down with Brandel and asked him what his plans are for retirement.

Brandel stated, "I just felt the department was a good spot because I don't want to step away in some from of controversy or when the department is in a bad place."

He continued, "I don't know that I could've scripted my career any better if I'd written it myself when I started. I've been given so many opportunities by this department and by this community and I'm incredibly thankful for that. I'm proud of my service and I'm excited for my next chapter."

“Shane has been an outstanding Police Chief in what has been a challenging time to be in law enforcement,” said Decatur City Manager Tim Gleason. “Our community has been made safer under his leadership and he is leaving the department in a better place. I wish him the best in retirement.”

Chief Brandel takes great pride in the following accomplishments:

Enhanced community service by modernizing the department through the strategic implementation of advanced technology, including upgraded equipment and software.
Restructured the department to align with modern policing practices, resulting in improved efficiency and effectiveness.
Strengthened officer training programs to ensure ongoing professional development and readiness for evolving public safety challenges.
Improved internal and external communications to foster greater transparency, collaboration, and engagement.
Developed and implemented strategies that optimize officer deployment for greater efficiency and effectiveness in serving the community.

Brandel will retire effective May 9, 2025. The City Manager will appoint a new Police Chief in the near future.
