DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Long wait times to report minor crimes could be a thing of the past after the Decatur Police Department launched a new system to report crimes online.

"They can go on through this online reporting system, use this new portal, and very quickly and efficiently report their crimes to the Decatur Police Department," Brad Allen, Deputy Chief of DPD said.

The new system, known as 'Cop-Logic,' is replacing an old system after users expressed frustration with accessing it.

"It's a user friendly system," Allen said. "The first thing they're gonna do when they get to the system is select the incident they're trying to report. From there, it's going to prompt them through all the steps. It's not going to let you advance until all the necessary boxes have been filled out and then it's basically done."

DPD also says every online report will be reviewed by someone at the department, just like if an officer took a report from you in person.

"The reports are still reviewed here at the police department, so it's not a file and forget it type of thing." Allen noted, "It's just a way for people to get their information to us on their time frame, when it's convenient for them, without having to wait for us."

Right now there are seven different incidents you can report through the online portal: Criminal damage to property, harassing phone calls, illegal dumping, lost property, retail theft, theft, and vehicle burglary.

DPD hopes more options will be added in the near future.
