SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - More than eleven thousand surface acres of water to explore, right here in Central Illinois.
Lake Shelbyville is home to beaches, campsites, and marinas. Which makes the Shelby County spot perfect for a day trip or weekend away.
“It’s pretty peaceful out here and it’s nice to see wildlife,” says paddleboarder Caroline White.
The Natural Resource Specialist at Lake Shelbyville, Ashley Florey says they’ve seen an increased interest in paddleboarding and kayaking since the pandemic.
"Paddleboarding and paddle sports have really just climbed. A lot of people are working from home. They’re eager to get outside and see what mother nature has to offer,” Florey said.
Boards and kayaks can be rented at Lithia Marina.
“It’s kind of nice to come out here and disconnect from everything. We have two paddleboards, so I like bringing a friend or my sister. It’s just a good time to connect,” said White.
Florey recommends exploring some of the coves.
“There’s a no wake cove between Opossum Creek and Coon Creek. Which kind of gives people who want to paddle... a more peaceful water,” Florey said.
The Shelbyville Kayak Trail is a 12-mile path that starts at the north end of the lake on the Kaskaskis River and goes all the way to Bo Wood.
Whether your adventure is 1 mile or 20 miles, it’s important to take safety measures when out on the lake.
“As you guys were out there on kayaks and paddleboards, those individuals had life jackets on. I think we just need to continue to preach the importance of water safety. We want everyone who comes to Lake Shelbyville to come home safely,” Florey said.
If you’re unsure of what to do when you hit the water, visit U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Visitor’s Office beforehand.
