High winds causing low visibility in parts of central Illinois

Dusty road conditions on March 28, 2025.

(WAND) — Friday's blustery winds and dry conditions are kicking up dust across central Illinois.

The Menard County Sheriff's Office reported on social media that visibility was low across roadways, and even near zero in some areas. The office said Illinois Route 123 south of Tallula was particularly bad.

Weldon Fire and Rescue also reported on social media warning motorists of a massive dust storm with zero visibility south of Clinton lake on route 48. The post said Weldon and Fire Rescue were responding to a two vehicle accident  in the area and traffic is being rerouted.

Last year, WAND News spoke to first responders about dust storm safety. The first tip was to avoid traveling in conditions that could cause whiteouts on the roadway.

If drivers do encounter dust storms with no visibility, Illinois State Police recommended slowing down, turning on hazard lights, and pulling of the road if it's safe to do so.
