Homestead Prairie Farm at Rock Springs opening for season June 4

DECATUR – The Rock Springs Conservation Area’s 1860 living history house museum will be open to the public for the season beginning Saturday, June 4.

Homestead Prairie Farm is a historic site that includes the Trobaugh-Good House and heirloom vegetable and herb gardens. The Trobaugh-Good House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest log homes in Macon County that still stands in its original location.

Visitors to the site will receive a guided tour of the site from costumed interpreters, during which they will get a glimpse into what life was like for Macon County residents in the 1860s.

Opening weekend will also include a special spinning wheel demonstration on Sunday, June 5.

Visitors can stop by any time between 2 and 4 PM to observe local spinner Mary Turner as she demonstrates a unique spinning wheel called a walking wheel or great wheel. This tool is operated by walking and turning the wheel by hand, rather than being seated. Turn will show visitors how it was used to spin wool into yarn and thread.

The open house tours and demonstration are free and open to all ages.

The site will be open every Saturday and Sunday from June through October from 1 to 4 PM.

More information about the Homestead Prairie Farm and history programs can be found on the Macon County Conservation website.
